Bangladesh Complete Historic Test Sweep Over Pakistan: A New Era for Tigers

Bangladesh cricket has entered a new chapter. In a moment that will be replayed in highlight reels for years to come, the Bangladesh Tigers completed a stunning 2-0 Test series sweep over Pakistan, winning the second and final Test at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium by 78 runs on 20 May 2026.

It was Bangladesh’s first Test series win at home against Pakistan and their second consecutive sweep after their 2-0 triumph on Pakistani soil in 2024. For a country where cricket has always meant passion over pedigree, this is not just a result but a proof that Bangladesh has genuinely arrived as a Test match force.

How Bangladesh Won the Second Test

The match unfolded across five gripping days in Sylhet, with momentum swinging in both directions before Bangladesh’s class eventually told.

Bangladesh batted first and posted 278 runs in the first innings, with wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das scoring a superb 126 off 159 balls, hitting 16 fours and two sixes. Pakistan responded with 232, with Babar Azam top-scoring with 68.

But it was Bangladesh’s second innings where the match was truly won. Entering at a testing moment, veteran batsman Mushfiqur Rahim produced an innings for the ages. His 137 runs off 233 deliveries, featuring 12 fours and a six, anchored Bangladesh’s second innings total of 390 and helped set Pakistan a formidable target of 437 runs. Litton Das chipped in with a vital 69, while Mahmudul Hasan Joy contributed a composed 52.

Chasing the record run chase of 437, Pakistan started the final day on 316 for 7. Mohammad Rizwan and Salman Agha had put on a gutsy 134-run partnership for the sixth wicket, frustrating the home side. But Taijul Islam breached Agha’s defence with an arm ball, dismissing him for 71. Rizwan, who batted valiantly for 94, was eventually caught at gully off Shoriful Islam to end Pakistan’s resistance on the fifth day.

Taijul Islam led the bowling with a six-wicket haul in the second innings. His control, flight and ability to extract turn on a Sylhet surface that was never dramatically hostile was a masterclass in spin bowling.

Mushfiqur Rahim: The Record That Changed History

This series will be remembered for many things, but the defining personal story belongs to Mushfiqur Rahim. At 39 years of age, Mushfiqur scored his 14th Test century which is Bangladesh’s all-time record as he became the oldest batter to score a century in World Test Championship history.

The innings also saw Mushfiqur become the first Bangladeshi cricketer to reach 16,000 international runs across all formats, with his total now standing at 16,058.

The records attached to this man’s name are staggering: Bangladesh’s all-time leading Test run scorer, the only Bangladeshi with three Test double centuries, and the first Bangladesh player to appear in 100 Test matches. That he continues to produce match-defining performances at 39, having already retired from T20Is and ODIs, makes his story one of the most remarkable in modern Asian cricket.

Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto reflected on the series win: “Our bowlers did a great job in hot conditions on a flat wicket. In the batting sometimes in the past we lost too many wickets, but nowadays we have brilliant partnerships. Our tailenders also contribute a lot. Those are the things we wanted to improve and I hope we continue.”

Four Consecutive Test Wins — A First in Bangladesh History

The significance of this sweep stretches beyond the result against Pakistan alone. For the first time in their history, Bangladesh have won four successive Tests, having beaten Ireland 2-0 last year before sweeping Pakistan twice.

This consistency across different opponents, different surfaces, different conditions,  is what separates a good team from a great one. Bangladesh are beginning to look like the latter.

The pace attack deserves particular recognition. Nahid Rana and Taskin Ahmed have developed into genuine Test-quality fast bowlers, offering a dimension that Bangladesh lacked for years. Combined with the experience of Taijul Islam in the spin department and the increasingly reliable Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Bangladesh now possess a bowling attack capable of dismantling opposition batting on both spin-friendly and pace-friendly surfaces.

Australia Tour in June

The timing of this victory could not be more perfect. The Australian cricket team is scheduled to tour Bangladesh in June 2026 for three ODIs and three T20Is, which is Australia’s first ODI series in Bangladesh in 15 years.

Riding the momentum of a historic Test sweep, the Tigers will now prepare to take on one of the world’s premier white-ball sides. For Bangladeshi fans, the prospect of watching their team, confident, cohesive, and genuinely dangerous face Australia on home soil is something to genuinely look forward to.

Bangladesh cricket has spent two decades trying to prove itself on the world stage. Right now, it does not need to prove anything. The results are speaking for themselves.

What Comes Next

The Tigers would grow more hunger for win after their historic Test sweep over Pakistan. Though, they have been dominated by Pakistan over the years as they have secured only four wins out of 16 matches. Surprisingly, all the victories came under the captaincy of Najmul Hossain Shanto, who deserves extra credit for leading the side to glorious days in their cricket history. Bangladesh now moved to the fifth position in the Test ranking, which is the record high.

Bangladesh will host Australia next in a three match ODI series and equal number of T20Is. The bilateral series is starting from June 13. Now the players will return to their domestic cricket in the ongoing Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League.
