Online Thrift Shops: A world of vintage attires

Wouldn’t it be cool if you’re wearing the most fashionable piece and it doesn’t even cost a fortune?

Online Thrift stores can make this thing possible in every way.

Thrifting means to shop from a store or market where they sell quality second hand items at a cheaper price.

Though most of Bangladeshis might have already been thrifted some items from flea markets such as New market, Nurjahan or Nilkhet, online thrifting is relatively a new concept here.

As online clothing businesses have been well established among the people of Bangladesh, online thrift pages have been growing simultaneously by ensuring the demand of quality clothes at a conveniently cheaper price.

Because of the primary advantages and the forthcomingness of internet, online thrift stores are becoming more and more popular among students and younger generations.

The commencement of online thrift stores of Bangladesh evolved at the prime point of Covid-19 as going out was difficult and people were drastically relying on online shops.

The boredom and the financial crisis of lockdown influenced young visionaries to start online thrift business.

Founder Tasnim Ayshi of a popular thrift store, Purpelite, shared, “I used to wear thrifted shirts myself. I saw some potential that maybe others would like it too.”

Such online thrift stores prioritise the latest fashion trends while picking each thrifted item.

As the fashion trends keep changing they conduct market research regularly and choose products keeping in mind about the fashion influence on their customers.

As founders of Bangladeshi thrift stores are mostly students, selling thrifted clothes has helped them to become financially more independent and responsible.

Another founder Sumaya of a popular thrift store ‘Vintage ‘N Young’ said, “This is not easy to manage everything at all.”

“It takes time and courage. And I’m still struggling to manage my study and this business. But I have to continue this business to manage my university tuition fees. All my money goes to my university tuition fees.”

Along the way there’s always some inconvenience like fraud customers, not picked up by Instagram algorithms, fake account with same name, delay in delivery etc.

Using second hand clothing is a blessing for the environment.

According to the data from the Environmental Protection Agency, 17 million tons of textile waste ended up in landfills in 2018.

On average, over than 3 million tons of clothes are incinerated.

According to the data of World Resources Institute, it takes 2700 litres of water to make only one cotton shirt.

Thrifting can pull the string of this uncontrollable environment pollution.

Using second hand clothings can prevent the thrown out clothes from being a major reason for creating imbalance in the environment.

The thrift stores are certainly influencing people more to purchase used clothes.

Sunayra Subha Pushpita, the founder of one of the most renowned thrift store, “Bangladesh Thrift” stated, “The concept of thrifting in a online platform is still new to Bangladesh.”

“So people don’t want to be more open minded when it comes to purchasing second hand clothing. But yes once they do purchase they fall in love with thrifting usually”.

With the noble cause that thrifting brings with it, thrifted clothes comes in a price range of BDT 200-800.Therefore, there’s always something for everyone.
