Nayeem Hasan turning synonymous to consistency in Chattogram

Bangladesh trail by 321 runs vs Sri Lanka on Day 2 of the ongoing first Test match, at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong on Monday.

The hosts posted 76/0 to end Day 2, in response to Sri Lanka’s first innings score of 397.

Mahmudul Hasan Joy (31*) and Tamim Iqbal (35*) will resume batting for Bangladesh on Day 3 and will be aiming to build on their momentum.

Earlier, a century by Angelo Mathews helped the visitors reach 397 in 153 overs.

Mathews hammered 199 runs in 397 balls, including 19 fours and a maximum.

Off-spinner Nayeem Hasan of Bangladesh was the highlight of Bangladesh bowling innings as he ended the innings with 6 wickets!

Sri Lanka were in commanding position after the first days play ending with 258-4.

However,on the second day things changed, chandimal and mathews were off to a steady start.

But that didn’t last long as nayeem trapped chandimal in front.

That wicket brought cataclysm to the lankan side as Shakib and Nayeem rocked Sri Lankan batting line up.

Dickwella couldn’t hold his ground for long as he was undone by Nayeem for just 3 runs.

Shakib made his presence felt by picking up mendis and Emubuldeniya on a quick succession.

It seemed that Sri Lanka would bundle out very quickly.

But that wasn’t to be, coming to bat at number 10 Vishwah Fernando put on a healthy partnership with Mathews.

Vishwah was hit on the head and was taken off.

Asitha Fernando couldn’t last long and he was clean bowled by Nayeem.

This wicket gave his 3rd five wicket haul.

Vishwah, who was hit on the head, came back.

Mathews batting on 199 was scalped by Nayeem.

He was the last man to depart and Sri Lanka were restricted to 397.

Nayeem picked up 6 wicekts giving away 105 in his 30 overs. Shakib took 3 wicekts and 1 wicket was taken by Taijul Islam.

Spinners took all the ten wicekts.

Khaled Ahmed could have taken the price scalp of Mathews on the start of days play, Mathews edged one but the keeper and bowler didn’t appeal.

Coming to bat, Bangladesh has had a rollicking start thus far.

Tamim and Joy have provided the hosts a good start.

Both looked well organized and handled the lankan bowlers with comfort.

Both Tamim and Joy are unbeaten on 35 and 31 respectively.

But, the peak of the day was none other than Nayeem.

He was not a part of the squad at the start, but the injury of Mehidy Hasan Miraz resulted in his inclusion to the playing XI!

Though he managed to take 2 wickets on the first day, but failed to maintain consistency in his bowling.

But, he replied to his own performance on Day 2 by picking another 4 wickets with a total 6 wickets in the 30 overs that he bowled in total.

The stats says, 30-4-105-6, this was the bowling figure for the offie. The best in his 8 match career!

Nayeem made his Test debut in 2018. He has played 8 matches in this time, but was always on and off the team.

But, Nayeem has turned synonymous to consistency at the ground of Chattogram since his debut.

It was his third 5-wicket haul in the 8 matches that he played. With this performance, the demand to make him more Test matches to play becomes obvious!
