Mariam Afiza: The first driver of metro rail in Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s commuting system entered a new era on Wednesday as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the country’s first metro rail service in Dhaka.

She inaugurated the operation of the first phase of the project, Uttara to Agargaon, at 11am at Uttara Sector 15 playground.

Mariam Afiza, the driver who operated the inaugural journey of the country’s first metro rail, said it was a dream fulfilled that Prime Minster and other dignitaries were her passengers on the momentous occasion.

“Actually, it’s a dream come true for us. Like everybody, I was excited and I was happy. As prime minister was with us during the journey, it was a proud moment for me,” she told journalists after completing the inaugural journey of metro rail.

Afiza has completed her master’s degree from Noakhali Science and Technology University in Chemistry. She was appointed as an operator of metro rail on November 2, 2021.

Regarding the metro rail, she said it is an environment-friendly transport and sophisticated one. “We took proper training home and abroad. Now, we are certified to operate the train.”

She said people of Dhaka experienced severe traffic congestion every day.

“We all hope that the people of the city will be rid of the curse of traffic congestion [through the metro rail].”
