World Bank Team Heads to Dhaka to Advance Gabtoli-Demra Metro Rail Project

Dhaka’s mass transit expansion is set to gain momentum as a high-level delegation from the World Bank arrives in the capital next Monday to move forward preparations for the Gabtoli-Demra Metro Rail, known as MRT Line-2.

Officials say the World Bank has expressed interest in financing the proposed corridor and will discuss feasibility studies, detailed engineering designs, financing structures, and tender preparation during the visit. The delegation will remain in Dhaka until January 22 to coordinate next steps with relevant agencies.

The metro system is operated by the Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL). According to the agency, a technical assistance project is being initiated to support feasibility analysis, design work, and bidding documents. The World Bank is set to provide a grant of USD 2.5 million for these preparatory activities. Final project costs will be determined after studies and designs are completed.

Originally planned as a 35-kilometer route from Gabtoli to Narayanganj, MRT Line-2 was later revised under the updated strategic transport plan of the Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA). The approved alignment now runs 23.5 kilometers from Gabtoli to Demra, passing through key areas including Dhaka Udyan, Mohammadpur, Science Lab, New Market, Azimpur, Lalbagh, Chawkbazar, Mitford, Naya Bazar, Dholai Khal, Dayaganj, Kajla, and Tarabo Bus Stand.

DMTCL plans to construct the line using a combination of elevated and underground sections. For depots and access corridors, 163.866 acres of land in Demra’s Matuail and Damripara mouzas have been earmarked and incorporated into the Detailed Area Plan of the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (RAJUK).

This initiative would mark the first time the World Bank finances a metro rail project in Bangladesh. During the visit, the delegation will also meet senior officials from DMTCL, DTCA, RAJUK, the Planning Commission, and the Economic Relations Division to align institutional and technical priorities.

DMTCL Managing Director Faruk Ahmed said the Bank has shown interest in MRT Line-2, though formal financing discussions will follow after the technical assistance phase concludes.

Currently, Dhaka’s MRT Line-6 is operational, with an extension to Kamalapur underway. Two additional projects, MRT Line-1 (Airport-Kamalapur) and MRT Line-5 (Hemayetpur-Vatara, Northern Route), have also been approved. Once completed, the Gabtoli–Demra corridor is expected to significantly ease east-west travel across the capital.
