Hamza’s Heroic Header Leads Bangladesh to 2–0 Win

International football made a triumphant return to the Bangabandhu National Stadium after 55 months, as Bangladesh defeated Bhutan 2–0 in their second match of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers on Tuesday.

A crowd of around 15,000 erupted in joy just six minutes into the game when Hamza Choudhury, the Leicester City midfielder making only his second appearance for Bangladesh, scored a powerful header from a Jamal Bhuiyan corner. It was a dream home debut for Hamza, who had only one goal in 57 Premier League matches before this.

Bangladesh dominated the first half with confident passing and attacking intent. Debutant Fahamidul Islam impressed on the left flank, creating chances and keeping the Bhutanese defense on alert. Captain Jamal Bhuiyan also came close to scoring, while defenders Tapu Barman and Taj Uddin marshalled the backline effectively, neutralizing Bhutan’s sporadic counterattacks.

Coach Javier Cabrera’s starting eleven featured five foreign-born players—Hamza, Jamal, Kazem Shah, Fahamidul, and Tariq Kazi—highlighting a new era for the national team. With an eye on the crucial upcoming clash against Singapore on June 10, Cabrera made three half-time changes, bringing on Sheikh Morsalin, Hridoy Hasan, and Mohammad Ibrahim for Jamal, Hamza, and Kazem.

The substitutions paid off swiftly. Just three minutes into the second half, Sohel Rana fired in a spectacular long-range strike to double Bangladesh’s lead. Rakib Hossain nearly added a third but pulled his shot wide. Fahim and Al-Amin were also brought on late as Bangladesh controlled possession and saw out the match with composure.

Off the pitch, however, the event was marred by organizational issues. Mismanagement at the handball stadium gate caused severe congestion, leaving several fans with valid tickets stranded outside. Some broke through barriers to enter the stadium. Adding to the drama, a pitch invader breached security in the second half, reaching the Bangladesh dugout and attempting to take a selfie with Hamza before being escorted away.

Goalkeeper Mitul Marma ensured a clean sheet with a fine late save, sealing a disciplined team performance. After the final whistle, Fahamidul shared a joyful moment with his family near the press box, while Hamza was surrounded by adoring fans eager for photos and autographs.

More than just a win, Tuesday’s match marked the symbolic rebirth of international football in Dhaka. With talent, passion, and growing fanfare, Bangladesh’s footballing future looks brighter than ever.
