BGMEA to expand Jamdani’s global presence

Jamdani

In an effort to negotiate lower prices with international retailers, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has begun producing high-end heritage fashion items like Jamdani locally.

The initiative was taken by the garment makers’ platform as part of its plan to export $100 billion worth of clothing and acquire 12% of the global apparel market by 2030.

160 students, weavers and Jamdani makers have been trained by the BGMEA, the commerce ministry, and the World Trade Organization to bring the plan to life.

According to BGMEA President Faruque Hassan, these 160 skilled workers will be able to create novel designs on the fabrics for garments that feature regional motifs.

“Because the prices of those goods are very high, we expect the local garment manufacturers to start producing high-end garment items from Jamdani fabrics.”

He said these at a certificate-giving ceremony to trainees at the BGMEA Complex in Dhaka on Wednesday.
